Phil's service

Do you know when to take care of the automotive service issues recommended for your vehicle? If in doubt, ask your automotive repair technician to help you understand what maintenance service is required and when it should be done. The items listed below are the most common issues that should be taken care of:

  • Change the oil (and the filter) at the recommended mileage interval.
  • Have the brakes inspected at every oil change and repair or replace the brake pads, rotors and calipers as necessary.
  • Make sure all lights are working and lenses clean and clear. Any burned-out bulbs should be replaced as soon as possible.
  • Replace the windshield if there are cracks or large pits in it that obstruct your view. Most car insurance policies have some type of coverage for windshields. Also don’t forget to replace the wipers (about every six to 12 months), especially if you live in a rainy climate.
  • Inspect the tires for the correct air pressure, tread depth, and tread wear. Have the tires rotated about every six months to ensure even treat wear.
  • Inspect the radiator and transmission periodically. If necessary schedule a flush of the system to replace dirty fluids.

Having problems detected and diagnosed while they are minor is key for preventing major costly automotive repair. There are two ways to pinpoint problems:

  • The “on-board diagnostic” system (or OBD) in today’s vehicles reads thousands of codes from your car's sensors, continuously compiling information. If it detects a problem, the “Check Engine” light on the instrument panel is triggered.
  • Have your automotive repair technician run a diagnostic so that small problems can be detected before they turn into major problems.

A word of advice: The investment you make in regular automotive service pays dividends in ensuring the safety and drivability of your vehicle.
