Phil's service

Most vehicle owners understand that if they want their vehicle to keep operating efficiently for as long as possible, the key is to keep up with the recommended automotive service items performed at the right intervals. This means that even though it will cost a few dollars up-front, in the long run, you can actually save money by avoiding costly automotive repairs later down the road.

A big plus with the new technology in today’s vehicles is the “On Board Diagnostics System.” This system continuously compiles data from the car’s sensors, which will trigger a warning light when a problem is detected, such as the check engine light, low oil, low battery, bad alternator, etc. When you see one of these warning lights, even though it’s probably okay to drive for a while longer, it’s a good idea to head to your auto shop and ask for a diagnostic test. Your mechanic will connect your car to a specialized computer to “read” the fault codes. The cause of that little light can be determined and the appropriate automotive repair can be made the first time around instead of on a trial-and-error basis.

If you keep your car long enough, you may experience one or more of the following car problems.

  • Taking to long to stop—The brake pads and rotors may be worn out and need to be replaced.
  • Car won’t start/hard to start—The distributor may be failing, the spark plugs are bad, or the solenoid has gone bad.
  • Shifting problems (slipping or jerking gears)—It may be time to replace the transmission fluid.
  • Your car bounces down the road—The shocks or struts have gone bad, which can also affect the car axles
  • The engine stalls or idles rough—A diagnostic test may determine that a tune up is needed.
  • Strange noises—Low motor oil, a rusted muffler, or bad shocks can all cause noises that you’ve never heard before.
  • Warning lights illuminating—Don’t ignore the warning lights on the instrument panel. They may either be service reminders or indicators of a problem.
  • Wobbling or drifting down the road—Check the tire tread, the wheel alignment, or tire balancing.
