What Does Car Maintenance Include?
Are you overwhelmed with all the vehicle maintenance that needs to be kept up on your vehicle? Are you left wondering what does car maintenance include? Be sure to find a reliable mechanic that you can trust to help you keep track of the work performed and what should happen next. Being a responsible car owner means sticking to a maintenance schedule.
Many drivers add at least 10,000 to 12,000 miles to their car in the course of a year, wearing down the parts and systems. Once this starts to happen, it is even more important to take care of vehicle maintenance. Some vehicle owners think that as long as their car gets them from point A to point B, everything is fine. But, car manufacturers don’t recommend certain service intervals for anything. The better care you give your car, the longer it will last and the less trouble it will give you.
There are at least 12 maintenance tips that will help keep your car running strong:
- An oil and oil filter service should be done about every 3,000 to 7,000 miles or every three to five months.
- Tune-ups are essential to ensure your spark plugs, filters, and hoses are clean, intact and doing their job.
- An air filter replacement is recommended every 15,000 to 20,000 miles.
- Get the timing belt changed every four or five years.
- Add a fuel system additive or cleaner every 3,000 to 7,000 miles to the fuel tank to improve your engine’s performance.
- Have your lights and tire pressure checked monthly.
- A tire rotation and brake inspection should happen about every 5,000 to 7,000 miles. They are your main point of contact with the road.
- Flush the cooling system every three years or 50,000 to 60,000 miles. Has it checked for leaks, blockages, contamination, and corrosion/oxidation issues?
- Has the brake fluid flushed every two years?
- A power steering system flush is recommended at least every 30,000 miles.
- Plan on a manual transmission fluid change at least every 20,000 miles.
- Change the automatic transmission fluid and filter when reaching 60,000 miles.
If you notice any dash warning lights come on, hear any strange noises or smell anything unusual coming from your car, it goes without saying, take it to your auto shop as soon as possible.
