Phil's service

In today’s challenging car market, many drivers are needing to keep their current vehicle longer than usual. That means they must be sure they are keeping up with required maintenance items, which will also help avoid costly car repairs. But you may be asking, just what does major car service include? The first place to find the answer is in your owner’s manual. It will list the services recommended by the manufacturer to make sure your vehicle keeps operating smoothly and efficiently for as long as possible.

So what does major car service include? Here is a common list for most vehicles:

  1. Change the oil and filter—Depending on your driving conditions and the type of oil you use, an oil change is recommended about every 3,000 to 7,000 miles or every three to five months.
  2. Tune-up—Spark plugs, filters, and hoses will be inspected and cleaned—about every 10,000 to 20,000 miles for vehicles with non-electronic ignitions; and anywhere from 30,000 to 100,000 miles for newer vehicles with electronic ignitions.
  3. Air filter—Replace about every 15,000 to 20,000 miles.
  4. Timing belt—Replace about every 60,000 to 100,000 miles.
  5. Fuel system—To improve engine performance, a fuel system additive or cleaner could be added to the fuel tank about every 3,000 to 7,000 miles.
  6. Lights—Replace any broken or burned-out light bulbs and make sure the lenses are clear.
  7. Tires—Check air pressure frequently, rotate about every 6,000 miles, and maintain the correct wheel alignment and tire balance.
  8. Brakes—Inspect brakes about every 5,000 to 7,000 miles, replacing pads and rotors as necessary. About every two years, flush the brake lines and replace the brake fluid.
  9. Radiator—Have it inspected regularly for leaks, blockages, contamination, and corrosion. A radiator flush may be recommended every 50,000 to 60,000 miles.
  10. Steering—A power steering system is recommended at least every 30,000 miles.
  11. Transmission—Transmission fluid should be replaced at least every 20,000 miles on manual transmissions. The fluid and filter should be replaced about every 60,000 miles on automatics.

Remember: The dollars and time spent on keeping up with the maintenance schedule will result in fewer visits to your auto shop for costly car repair while also giving you confidence driving your vehicle down the road.
