Many drivers are anxious when they go to an auto repair shop, concerned as to the quality of the auto repair that will take place on their vehicle. Don’t be afraid! You can relieve some of your anxiety by asking your mechanic certain questions that will help you understand the auto shop’s policies regarding the costs for labor and parts, warranties, and the specific type of repair to be performed. No one wants to receive a call from the auto repair shop later on with news about added expenses, a longer period of time required for the work, and unexpected work that needs to be done.
- Ask questions – Ask for a simple explanation of the auto repair to be performed. The mechanic should also ask you questions for diagnostic information and to know how you would like to proceed with the necessary work.
- Don’t hurry –Take your time when dropping off your vehicle to give you time to ask questions and for the mechanic to talk to you. If they are too busy to talk to you, you may need to find another auto repair shop. A quick diagnosis is often wrong, wasting your time and money.
- Stay in touch – Leave a phone number with the shop and make sure you are available to take their call. Your mechanic will want to call you to discuss the problem with your car, the auto repair required, the cost, and how long it will take.
- Understand Policies – Make sure you understand the auto shop’s policies for labor rates, guarantees, warranties, and acceptable methods of payment. Most auto shops have their policies in writing.
