As the miles add up, the transmission fluid becomes contaminated with little particles of metal as the bearings and gears inside the transmission wear down, so that the fluid can no longer lubricate effectively. If these contaminants are not drained out, you are shortening the lifespan of your transmission. Also, check the level of the transmission fluid regularly. If it is consistently too low, the transmission will not be properly lubricated and internal damage could be taking place within the transmission unit.
So when do you need a transmission fluid change? For a manual transmission vehicle, most manufacturers recommend transmission service about every 30,000-60,000k miles. Transmission service for automatic vehicles is typically recommended about every 60,000-100,000 miles.
If you start to notice any of the problems listed below, schedule a transmission service as soon as possible:
- Strange noises, such as whining or grinding
- Delayed shifting
- Popping out of gear
- Leaking transmission fluid
