Some drivers may not consider routine tire rotation important as part of good car care. However, if those drivers find themselves stranded with a flat tire due, they will understand why tire rotation is important. Neglecting the care of your tires could be putting yourself and others at risk. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), thousands of auto accidents each year are caused by tire failure due to uneven tread wear. The NHTSA encourages tire rotation as part of regular car maintenance. So just what is tire rotation? Rotating the tires on your vehicle simply means moving them to a different position so that the tread wears in an even pattern on all four tires. Generally, the front tires are moved to the rear of the vehicle and the rear tires are moved to the front.
Why is tire rotation important, you ask? Simply stated, so that your tires will last as long as possible! The sections of a tire that come into contact with the road more heavily than other sections receive more stress, thus wearing out fastest. Tire rotation equalizes tire wear. For example, because front tires receive more stress than back tires, they are “rotated” to the back and the back tires are “rotated” to the front.
