Perhaps you are driving in your car, and you notice that the car makes a strange clicking sound or you feel an odd vibration when you reach certain speeds. This could mean that your car has a problem with a failing axle or broken struts. How can you tell if your axle is broken versus a problem with your car's automotive struts?

What Is a Car Axle & Where Is It Located?

Your vehicle's axle is a central shaft that is designed to connect the vehicle's transmission, sometimes referred to as the differential, to the wheels. This component is crucial for the safe operation of your car or other motor vehicle. The axle is vital for making the vehicle move forward and backward as a driver operates it.

There are two different types of axles. These are live axles which are necessary for car movement and dead axles which support weight while the car is in motion but do not have anything to do with the vehicle's motion. There are different places on the car where axles are located. Axles may be front, rear, or stub axles.

How Can You Tell if Your Axle Is Broken?

There are some common signs of a worn or broken axle. These signs include:

  • Clicking or grinding noises heard while driving
  • Strange clunking when you shift gears
  • Grease spills under the vehicle
  • Noticeable vibrations when driving
  • Difficulties or failures when you attempt to move the car backward or forward
  • Problems with steering or pulling to one side
  • May notice uneven tire wear or wheels not turning

Issues with Automotive Struts

Worn or broken struts can sometimes be the forerunner of a broken axle if not repaired promptly. You will usually notice a very bumpy and uncomfortable ride when struts begin to fail. This bouncing can in turn cause your car's axle to break.

Have your vehicle assessed by a qualified mechanic to diagnose and repair these dangerous problems.
