Phil's service

As a conscientious driver, you want a safe and dependable vehicle. But you may be wondering just what is the vehicle maintenance schedule? The answer is actually quite simple--follow the factory-recommended service schedule listed in your vehicle owner’s manual. This will help ensure that you are driving as safe as possible, especially if you’re heading out on a summer road trip.

So just how often should you do car maintenance, you ask? Mileage-based service schedules are generally obsolete in today’s newer cars. Most of them come equipped with an in-vehicle maintenance reminder system. This reminder system takes a number of vehicle operating conditions into account and provides an alert on the dash when it is time for certain services, such as oil changes, fluid level checks, brake inspections, and other vehicle maintenance services. Even though you should be able to trust this system, it would be wise to ask your auto technician about how often should you do car maintenance, especially if you don’t add many miles to your vehicle in a year’s time.

For older cars, vehicle maintenance intervals are still based on mileage. There are usually two different maintenance schedules, one for cars driven in “normal” conditions and another for those driven in “severe” conditions. The exact definition of severe driving varies, but it usually includes one or more of the following conditions:

  • Short trips (5 miles or less) or constant stop-and-go driving
  • Extremely hot, cold, or dusty climates
  • Mountainous terrain
  • Carrying heavy loads or towing a trailer.

Plan ahead for any necessary repair or maintenance by looking for an auto shop you can trust before you need them. Things to look for include the shop’s appearance, technician training and certification, insurance coverage, and customer satisfaction.
