Phil's service

Is your car starting to slip and slide around corners? It may be time to purchase new tires! Installing the right kind of tires on your vehicle is vital for safe driving. It is a big investment and with so many different kinds of tires on the market today, it may be difficult to make a choice. The tire experts at your tire service center will be glad to answer your questions to help you choose the right kind of tire for your vehicle.

If tread depth has reached 2/32”, it is time for new tires! Here are three easy ways you can check tread depth:

  • Penny Test – Insert a penny (Lincoln’s head should be upside down) between the tread ribs on your tire. If the top of Lincoln’s head disappears, your tread is still above 2/32”. If you can see Lincoln’s entire head, the tread is too shallow. Because tires often wear unevenly, test several spots around the tire.
  • Tread Depth Gauge – You can find a simple tread depth gauge at your local auto parts store. It should show at least 2/32”.
  • Tread Wear Indicator Bars – Every tire comes equipped with “wear bars” embedded between the tread ribs at 2/32”. If the wear bar is flush with the outside of the tread, it’s time to replace your tires.

Consider these tips to help you in purchasing new tires:

  • Correct wheel size. Purchase the proper size tire that fits the wheels of your vehicle (find the tire code listed for your vehicle).
  • Install a full, matching set. This provides a greater level of safety plus peace of mind knowing that all four tires will provide equal service. Mismatched tires create a safety hazard.
  • Check the spare. The spare tire should be in good shape and match the new tires as much as possible.
  • Correct alignment and balancing. Make sure your new tires are both aligned and balanced.
  • Break-in new tires slowly. This will make sure your suspension and alignment are good so that your tires begin to wear evenly.
