Phil's service

Owning a vehicle comes with unparalleled freedom; however, with great freedom comes great responsibility. Car repairs can put a considerable dent in our pockets. You can budget for a scheduled auto repair, but unexpected breakdowns usually take a toll on the pockets.

So, here are some tips on driving habits and auto repair services to ensure your car is running efficiently while saving money on repairs.

  • Oil and filter changes:  Consider changing your oil and filters in intervals of 5,000 miles or as your manufacturer recommends. Frequent changes may be necessary if you have erratic driving habits, carry heavy loads, the engine is old, or go off-road often. Oil and filter changes ensure a cool engine, proper lubrication to prevent tear, efficient gas consumption, and increased engine longevity.
  • Check your tires:  To assess the state of your tires, check the tread and sidewalls; more specifically, check for cracks, punctures, scrapes, and bulges.
  • Regular tune-ups: A fuel system cleaning can significantly reduce the amount you spend on fuel. Also, make sure the tires are correctly aligned.
  • Drive at steady speeds: Although your car will rev better at higher speeds, high speeds negatively affect fuel efficiency. Driving at high speeds means that you spend more money on fuel per distance.
  • Use regular gasoline:  Regular gas typically has an octane rating of 87. Contrary to the myths, premium gas will not lead to better performance, mileage, speed, or a clean car running system.
  • Offload:  Keep the vehicle as light as possible when not in use. For instance, take down the bicycle racks and clean out the trunk.
  • Routine maintenance:  Follow manufacturer instructions on recommended maintenance intervals for your vehicle.

Note that budgeting for auto repair services is a continuous process. However, if one stays informed and proactive, one can avoid costly auto repairs.
