Car problems on a long road trip can be a frustrating experience, not to mention expensive! After one has spent weeks and months planning their summer road trip—where to go and what to see—checking out their vehicle is often overlooked. A pre-trip inspection will make you’re your vehicle has the appropriate auto repair services needed to help avoid breakdowns and find yourself looking for an auto repair shop in a strange town.

Here are some of the auto repair services that should be considered:

  • Tires—Check tires for the correct air pressure, tread wear, and if there are any bulges and bald spots. Under-inflated tires lower fuel efficiency and increase the risk of damage to your tires. Uneven tread wear indicates that an alignment service may be needed, or you may actually need to invest in new tires before your trip.
  • Hoses and belts—Hoses and belts can become cracked and brittle as they age. They are vital to the proper functioning of the electrical system, air conditioning, power steering, and cooling system.
  • Filters and fluids—This includes the motor oil, power steering, brake, and transmission fluids, as well as the antifreeze/coolant mixture in the radiator and the windshield washer solvent in the water reservoir.
  • Lights—All lights (both interior and exterior) should be working so that you can see and be seen. Have burned-out or broken bulbs replaced at your auto repair shop before leaving on your trip?
  • Wiper blades—If the blades are more than six months old, they may need to be replaced so you can see clearly when driving during a sudden summer rainstorm.
  • Brakes—Have the pads and rotors inspected and repaired if necessary to make sure you are not sliding through stop signs.
  • Battery—Make sure the battery connection is clean, tight and corrosion-free, and that the battery is holding a strong charge.
  • Tune up—A tune up before your trip will help the engine deliver the best balance of power and fuel economy.

Remember: There is no guarantee that the unexpected flat tire or break-down won’t happen, but you can reduce the chance of unplanned, costly car trouble by taking care of any necessary auto repair services at your favorite auto repair shop before hitting the road.
