Phil's service

It’s a fact that many mechanics see cars brought in that may not have received the appropriate automotive service at the recommended intervals. If you are headed out on a summer road trip, thinking of all the cars on the road that may need some form of automotive repair is a little scary. With busy schedules, it is easy to forget when the last time was that you had that last oil change or tune up.

If you pay attention to the warning signs of needed automotive service listed below, your vehicle will give you good service for many miles:

  • Dashboard warning lights. Your car's onboard diagnostic system is essential to keeping your vehicle operating efficiently. If you see flashing or blinking warning lights, ask your mechanic to run a diagnostic test.
  • Oil spots under the car. Dark brown oil spots indicate a motor oil leak. The problem could be a filter or drain plug not secured tightly or a compromised gasket in the engine.
  • Greenish fluid under the car. This means that radiator fluid could be leaking from a bad fitting on a hose or from a cracked radiator. This can lead to an overheating engine and cause damage.
  • Noisy Brakes. When brake pads are wearing out, they may emit a high-pitch squeal or squeak. Squealing, squeaking, or metal-on-metal grinding sounds can also indicate that rotors, calipers, and discs have become worn out.
  • Rumbling or sputtering from beneath the car. This usually indicates a problem with the exhaust system, such as a hole in the muffler or even a bad catalytic converter.
  • Chirping or screeching from under the hood. Drive belts, also known as serpentine belts, direct engine power to accessory systems. As these belts wear, they become frayed and brittle, prone to breaking. Don’t delay in replacing these belts as recommended.
  • Humming, growling or roaring when driving. Your tires may be out-of-round, the tread is worn down, or have a bad wheel bearing.

Remember: Neglecting needed automotive service can quickly cause more damage, resulting in costly automotive repair. Don’t put off a summer automotive service!
