Why Vehicle Maintenance is Important?
Some inexperienced drivers may wonder why vehicle maintenance is important? The fact is that if you want to keep your car or truck operating for as long as possible while avoiding expensive repairs, don’t neglect the car maintenance schedule listed in your owner’s manual. Not only will you maintain a reliable source of transportation, but you will save money and time spent at an auto shop. Plus, your car will retain a higher blue-book value for insurance or resale purposes.
In addition to the basic car maintenance schedule every vehicle owner should follow, there are a few little extras that you should keep an eye on:
Each day before driving off...
Walk around your car and visually inspect it for damage to the bodywork, for flat or low tires, cuts in the sidewalls, cracks in the windows, or puddles under the car. If left unattended, these issues can lead to serious problems:
Once a week...
- Check tire pressure, tread depth, and general condition of all the tires, including the spare.
- Check the level of all fluids, including oil, coolant/antifreeze, brake fluid, windshield washer, power steering fluid, and more. Your mechanic can help you check the fluids and top off as needed.
- Replace burned-out or broken light bulbs, and make sure the lenses are clean.
- Inspect your windshield wiper blades. If they have been in the car for at least six months, it is time to replace them.
- Inspect the bodywork for any serious damage that may cause a driving hazard.
- Mirrors and windows should be clear of cracks or chips.
- Wash your car, inside and out, every few days during winter to remove the salt or chemicals from icy roads. Applying a good wax helps protect the finish while repelling water and dirt.
Even though the issues above are seemingly minor and of no consequence, head to your auto shop as soon as you can before a small problem turns into a costly repair. The time you spend inspecting your vehicle will save you money with fewer visits to your auto shop and give you peace of mind knowing you have a reliable vehicle.
