What Car Maintenance Needs to be done for Summer?
The hot temperatures of summer are here to stay for a while! It is important that you know what car maintenance needs to be done, especially if you are heading out on a road trip! Schedule a thorough pre-trip inspection to take care of any basic vehicle maintenance items and also to look for signs of pending problems.
So what car maintenance needs to be done to survive summer? The vehicle maintenance items listed below are vital for safe driving any time of year:
- Battery—Check the fluid level and clean any corrosion away from the posts and cable connections. Make sure it is receiving a strong charge from the alternator.
- Wiper Blades—If you notice streaks across the glass, replace the blades so you are prepared for those sudden summer rainstorms.
- Lights—Make sure that all lights (exterior and interior) are working properly and that the lenses are clean. Make sure the brake lights and blinkers are working properly.
- Oil Change and Filter—Make sure the oil is the right viscosity for warm weather. Use a good quality filter. If an oil change is due while you are gone on a road trip, schedule it before you leave.
- Radiator, Hoses, and Belts—Make sure there aren’t any cracks or leaks in the hoses and that you have the correct ratio of coolant and water in the radiator.
- Tires—Repair cuts or holes in the rubber and sidewalls, maintain the right air pressure, rotate about every 6,000 miles, and check the alignment and balancing.
- Brakes—Have your brakes inspected at each oil change. If you start to feel unusual vibrations, hear screeching or squealing, or if the brake pedal feels “mushy,” have everything checked out and repaired as soon as possible.
Want a stress-free road trip? Take care of the vehicle maintenance items listed above. Even with all your planning, there could be an unexpected delay or breakdown. So packing an emergency kit is important. It should include water and snacks, jumper cables, flashlight (with extra batteries), road flares, jack, and spare tire, first aid kit, blanket, and cell phone and charger.
