Have you rushed out the door on your way to work and find that your car won’t start? You wonder if the battery is dead, or if the alternator starting to fail? If you know what are the signs of a dying car battery, you will save yourself frustration and inconvenience by know when to take care of a car battery replacement before you’re left stranded in your driveway.

So do you know what are the signs of a dying car battery? Here are the most common signs that you may start to experience:

  1. Slow engine crank. A car that is hard to start or won’t start at all.
  2. Clicking sound when turning the key. A rapid clicking sound indicates that the available power is too low to crank the engine.
  3. Dim headlights. They aren’t getting enough power.
  4. Electrical problems. The electronic accessories (power seats, power windows, radio, dashboard lights, headlights, windshield wipers, and more) aren’t getting enough power to function properly.
  5. Dashboard warning light. This light (typically in the shape of a car battery) indicates a bad battery, a failing alternator, or some other issue with the electrical system. You have the electrical system inspected by a certified technician.
  6. Swollen battery case. Constant exposure to extreme temperatures (especially repeated freezing and thawing) can cause the sides of the battery case to swell. A car battery replacement will be necessary if this happens.
  7. Old battery. A car battery usually only lasts around four to five years, based on exposure to extreme temperatures and your driving habits. If your battery is getting close to the four-year mark, have it tested frequently.
  8. Loose battery terminals. If you have tightened the terminals and the battery still seems as if it is dying, it is time for a car battery replacement.
  9. A light was left on. If your battery is good and there are none of the problems described above, a simple recharge may be all that is needed to recharge the battery.
