Most drivers know that at some point in time, every car needs a tune up to keep it performing well. But how do you know if your car needs a tune up? You will probably start to notice one or more of the following problems if it’s time to tune up your car:
- Check engine light illuminates all of a sudden while driving.
- During acceleration or braking, the engine idles rough or stalls.
- You are filling up the tank more often due to decreased fuel efficiency.
- You experience difficulty shifting, such as slipping, jerking, or popping out of gear.
- You are vibrating as you go down the road, especially felt in the steering wheel or seat.
When you actually need to tune up your car will vary from car to car depending on the manufacturer’s recommendation stated in the service manual. If you have an older car with a non-electric ignition, the recommended tune up interval is about 10,000 to 12,000 miles. Your mechanic will replace spark plugs, filters, and fluids.
However, if your car is newer and equipped with electronic ignition, fuel injectors, computer processors, and sensors, it is more difficult to determine when it’s time to tune up your car. Many of today’s cars can go anywhere from 25,000 to 100,000 miles before needing a tune up depending on the technology built-in to the car. So it’s important to check your owner’s manual for the tune up specifications!
A word of advice: Basic preventive maintenance, a car tune up not only helps maintain your vehicle’s power and performance but also helps extend its life!
