A muffler is still an important component of today’s modern vehicles. As long as cars have combustion engines, they will require some type of muffler and exhaust system. A muffler not only reduces the noise level created by the engine, but it also plays a major role in diverting the toxic fumes away from the passenger cabin.

So how do you know when your muffler is bad? There are three common muffler problems that you should watch for:

  1. Increase in noise level - The muffler should run relatively quiet in the background when your car is running. If there is a problem in the muffler, it could sound like a roaring monster.
  2. Decreased fuel efficiency - Exhaust systems in good working order typically produce the best gas mileage. If your driving habits have not changed but you are having to fill up the gas tank more often than usual, look for a muffler problem.
  3. The smell of exhaust fumes - The smell of exhaust fumes inside your car's cabin could mean there is a leak in your exhaust system. The muffler should be funneling these fumes outside and away from your car.

If you’re noticing any of the above signs of muffler problems, don’t put off taking your car to your auto shop. Putting off the repair for a minor problem can turn into a larger and more costly repair job!
